Premiering in Critics’ Week at Cannes and selected as Taiwan’s 2026 Oscar submission, Left-Handed Girl marks director Tsou’s confident return to feature filmmaking. Inspired by her own memories of family tensions and quiet rebellion, Tsou crafts a deeply human story that carries the raw naturalism of her early collaborations with Sean Baker (Take Out, 2004).

 

A single mother and her two daughters move back to Taipei after years in the countryside to open a food stall at the bustling night market. Each must adapt to this vibrant yet unforgiving environment to survive and keep the family together. But when their traditional grandfather forbids the youngest daughter from using her “devil hand,” generational secrets and long-suppressed conflicts begin to surface.

 

Blending seasoned actors with striking newcomers discovered through social media, Tsou captures the authenticity of everyday life while probing the fractures between tradition and individuality, expectation and desire. A poignant exploration of gender, family, and the small acts of resistance that shape who we are, Left-Handed Girl balances naturalism with cinematic poetry—reaffirming Tsou’s place as one of contemporary cinema’s most empathetic storytellers.

《左撇子女孩》於坎城影展「國際影評人週」世界首映，並獲選為台灣角逐 2026 奧斯卡最佳國際影片代表作，由台灣、美國、英國和法國合拍，導演鄒時擎取材自她自身的家庭記憶與靜默反叛，編織出一段深具人性的故事。

故事講述一位單親母親帶著兩個女兒從鄉間回到台北，在熱鬧的夜市經營小吃攤。她們必須在充滿活力卻殘酷的環境中適應生存，並守護這個小小家庭。然而，當傳統的祖父嚴禁小女兒使用「魔鬼的左手」，家族的祕密與長久壓抑的矛盾逐漸浮現。

 

導演鄒時擎以細膩視角描繪台灣夜市的人情和世代之間的矛盾。與西恩·貝克（艾諾拉 Anora, 2024）共同編劇，演員陣容包括蔡淑臻、馬士媛、葉子綺、黃鐙輝、陳慕義、趙心妍。電影以獨特的視角捕捉臺灣夜市文化的生命力，透過充滿感官張力的影像語言，探索女孩在家庭束縛與自我覺醒之間的拉扯，不僅是一部關於家庭與成長的作品，更是一場關於情感、身份與自我認同的深刻對話。

鄒時擎自2004年的《外賣》大受好評後，再度與當代獨立電影之王西恩·貝克合作，共同擔任編劇、製片、剪輯。《左撇子女孩》是一部動人心弦的作品，關注性別、家庭，以及那些形塑自我的細微抗衡，在上映前就已備受國際影壇肯定。不但入選法國坎城影展「影評人週」競賽單元獲「甘氏基金會獎」與「金鐵道獎」，並受多倫多國際影展、溫哥華國際影展邀請參展，入圍釜山國際影展主競賽單元，導演鄒時擎更被譽為當代最具同理心的電影敘事者。
