Ah-Jiang, an upright 15-year-old teenager always having a dream of being a superhero, gets entangled as a victim in a kidnap, along with another boy Dan Sui. The sudden death of the mastermind results in the failure of the kidnap and triggers a series of unexpected yet funny incidents. On top of that, Ah-Jiang is striving to study hard to make it back to attend the upcoming entrance exam…

 

陳玉勳的電影長片處女作《熱帶魚》，從一樁綁架案引出一連串看似荒誕不經的事件，以九零年代的台灣為背景，關照升學主義、非法賭博、城鄉差距等社會問題。初試啼聲即在國內外影壇皆有斬獲——盧卡諾影展藍豹獎，以及金馬獎最佳原著劇本獎和女配角獎（文英），也奠定陳玉勳往後『喜劇鬼才』的風格。

 

準備聯考的國三學生阿強，因緣際會之下，與另一名小男孩道南一起被綁架。兩名綁匪正籌該如何處理肉票，其中一名綁匪卻橫禍身亡，獨自面對兩名兒童的綁匪阿慶更不知道如何處理才好，只好找上他的親朋好友商量，於是展開一段令人跌破眼鏡、又趣味橫生的故事......。
