Winner of multiple awards in 2024, director Kek-huat LAU (The Tree Remember, TWFF 2021) delivers an ambitious historical documentary tracing the overlooked legacy of Japanese imperialism in Asia during World War II. Through testimonies from surviving witnesses across Taiwan and Southeast Asia, the film uncovers long-suppressed memories from the perspectives of both civilians and soldiers.
Running nearly five hours, the film travels from Taiwan to Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, examining the complex histories of Taiwanese soldiers who served in the Japanese imperial army. Drawing on cross-generational memories and extensive archival materials—including oral histories, family letters, diaries, and rare footage—the documentary reveals how war reshaped identities, loyalties, and everyday life across the region.
Echoing the investigative spirit of Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah, the film challenges nationalist narratives and revisits the human consequences of empire. By confronting silenced histories and questioning the fragile boundaries between victim and perpetrator, it offers a rare non-Western perspective on one of the most consequential periods in modern history.
