From a chaotic wedding to a tragic funeral, everything happens rapidly in the eyes of an eight-year-old boy Yang Yang. He tries to understand adults' life by capturing what people cannot see with his camera. This young boy witnesses everything, from the mundane lifestyle to the hidden secrets of his family. 

作為楊德昌導演生涯最後一部、也可能是評價最高的長片，《一一》早已成為影史的經典，其傑出不僅在於電影本身的動人，更因彼時攝製與發行階段遭遇的困難，使得長時間未能在台灣正式上映，和本國觀眾緣慳一面，賦予了電影的傳奇色彩與討論度。

這部動人的都會三溫暖聚焦在一個中產階級家庭。簡家祖母 (唐如醞 飾)在一場婚禮後一病不起，其他人也不怎麼好過：爸爸簡南峻 (吳念真 飾）偶遇過往情人；妻子敏敏不堪壓力離家靈修 (金燕玲 飾)；高中的女兒 (李凱莉 飾) 情竇初開，與鄰居的男友展開了三角戀；而簡家小兒子簡洋洋 (張洋洋 飾) ，總是喜歡用相機從背後拍人，他觀察、紀錄大人生活的起起伏伏。每個人獨自煩憂，卻都不約而同來到床邊，對昏迷的祖母說話告解，期待她甦醒，彷彿那是唯一的出路。
