As the latest installment of the highly acclaimed Inspired by Island literary documentary series, I Dream of the Ocean represents an intimate, four-year undertaking by director CHOU Wen-chin. Turning his lens toward the monumental Tao/ Yami maritime writer Syaman Rapongan and his son, Syaman Lamuran, CHOU masterfully intertwines literature, physical labor, and ancestral heritage into a deeply sensory cinematic experience.
The narrative anchors itself around an epic 517-day journey of constructing a traditional Tao plank boat (tatala). Through patient observation and stunning cinematography, the film documents the father and son from the initial selective logging in the mountain forests to the sacred launching rituals and eventual deep-sea fishing expeditions. For Syaman, the plank boat is far more than a cultural craft; it is a profound monument of grief for his own father and a living vow to the next generation, beautifully reflecting cross-generational cultural transmission and the rigorous ethics of the ocean.
Embodying Syaman Rapongan’s philosophy of "Kinesthetic Literature"—where writing and physical action are one—Chou adopts a meticulously restrained directorial approach, minimizing interviews and voiceovers. Enhanced by music director LIANG Chi-huei’s mesmerizing soundscape that fuses traditional Tao chants with contemporary ambient audio, I Dream of the Ocean stands as a monumental, deeply quiet epic that honors the enduring resilience of Taiwan's indigenous maritime soul.
